A47 Jay Lane to Rackham's Corner Roundabout Formal Statutory Process
Introduction
Following a feasibility study carried out in 2021, we’re now starting planning work to close the gaps and improve this section of A47.
The work involved in closing these gaps will include:
• removal of existing filter lanes that allow vehicles to manoeuvre in and out of the central reservation gaps.
• installation of new kerbing along the central reservation.
• planting of central reservation with grass to improve biodiversity.
• replace, improve, or modify existing road markings.
• modify, remove, or relocate directional signs
• improve and extend the safety barrier along the central reservation.
• drainage improvements
At Jay Lane we are proposing the following:
• removal of hard surfacing along the junction islands
• replacement of existing junction island kerbs
• filling junction islands with grass to improve biodiversity
• changing road markings by removing give-way markings, removing give way triangles, and modifying the chevron markings
• removal of illuminated give way signs
We also propose making changes to the layout of Rackham’s Corner Roundabout to improve safety. Road markings will be modified to encourage better road positioning. This includes lane indication arrows and lane destination markings on both the northbound and southbound approaches to the roundabout, as well as on the circulatory carriageway of the roundabout itself.
We also propose the introduction of double yellow line markings on the informal slip at the southbound junction to ‘Midway Nurseries’. This is because the road appears to be used for parking which obstructs the view of drivers exiting the nurseries. The double yellow lines will make it clear to drivers that parking is prohibited and keep the junction clear.
Finally, the Rackham’s Corner Roundabout and the northbound approach to the roundabout will be resurfaced.
